Organising group transport to Kruger National Park

Routes, entry gates, overnight stops and vehicle recommendations for groups heading to the iconic Kruger National Park.

Kruger National Park is one of Africa's greatest wildlife destinations and one of South Africa's most popular group tour destinations. Whether you're organising a school excursion, a corporate incentive trip, a family reunion or an inbound tourism charter, getting the transport right makes all the difference between a seamless safari and a logistical headache.

Choosing the right entry gate

Kruger has nine main entry gates, and the right one for your group depends entirely on where you're coming from and where you're staying inside the park.

  • Paul Kruger Gate (near Skukuza): most popular, best for groups from Johannesburg via the N4
  • Numbi Gate (near Pretoriuskop): good alternative from Gauteng, less busy
  • Orpen Gate (near Orpen Camp): best for groups from the Midlands or eastern Free State
  • Phabeni Gate: newest gate, close to Skukuza, fast access from Hazyview
  • Phalaborwa Gate: best for groups from Limpopo or flying into Phalaborwa
Tip: Confirm your gate entry time with your accommodation booking. SANParks requires groups to enter before the gate closes (times vary by season). Build buffer time into your departure schedule.

Getting there from Johannesburg

The most common route from Johannesburg to Kruger is via the N4 to Nelspruit (now Mbombela), then north on the R538 to Hazyview or White River, and into the park via Paul Kruger or Phabeni gates. The journey is approximately 5–6 hours depending on traffic and stops.

  • Distance: approximately 480km from Johannesburg to Paul Kruger Gate
  • Recommended departure time: 04:00–05:00 for a full first day in the park
  • Planned rest stop: Machadodorp or Nelspruit (approximately 3 hours from JHB)
  • Fuel stop: Hazyview or White River before entering the park

Vehicle recommendations for Kruger

Road conditions inside Kruger are mostly tar on main routes, with gravel on many secondary roads. Standard tourist buses and coaches are fine on tar roads between camps. For game drives on gravel roads, smaller vehicles (10–22 seaters) are more suitable.

  • Main camp transfers and paved routes: any size coach or bus suitable
  • Gravel road game drives: 10–22 seater minibus or midibus recommended
  • For mixed itineraries: consider a full coach from Johannesburg + smaller vehicles inside the park

Overnight logistics

For multi-day Kruger trips, your driver will need accommodation close to your camp. Most SANParks camps have staff accommodation or a nearby guesthouse. This should be arranged as part of the charter booking — SA Coach Charters handles all of this as part of our multi-day tour logistics service.
